Super League: Wigan Warriors 46-6 Castleford Tigers
- Published
Wigan ran in eight tries to avenge last week's Challenge Cup defeat by powering to victory over Castleford.
Warriors dominated the first half, tries for Dom Manfredi, Matty Bowen, Jordan James and Joe Burgess earning a 22-0 half-time lead at the DW Stadium.
Liam Farrell went over for the home side's fifth try before Michael McIlorum also got in on the act.
Burgess and Manfredi each grabbed a second try, Ashley Gibson scoring Cas's only try of the game in between.
Matty Smith successfully kicked seven of his eight penalties on a memorable night for the hosts.
It was sweet revenge for Wigan, beaten 16-4 on the same ground by Castleford in last week's Challenge Cup quarter-final.
Anthony Gelling's pass saw Manfredi go over in the right-hand corner and Smith's conversion crept in as Wigan opened up a six-point lead.
Bowen intercepted a pass to run 70 metres to touch down for Wigan's second try, which Smith converted, but he was off target when James sprinted through the Castleford defence to race over.
Great build-up play set up a fourth try as quick hands from Sam O'Loughlin enabled Burgess to score, with Smith's conversion making it 22-0 to Wigan at the break.
Castleford started the second half with some pressure, but Farrell found a gap and dashed through for the home side's fifth try and Smith's kick stretched the lead to 28 points.
Smith was on target again when McIlorum scurried under the Castleford defence to score near the posts.
Castleford thought they had finally got on the board but Kirk Dixon had a try disallowed for a knock-on and Wigan made them pay as Burgess jumped higher to collect the ball and power over.
Gibson slid over for Castleford's only try, which Jamie Ellis converted, but Wigan were still not done and a fantastic flick from Gelling saw Manfredi fire over the line to complete the rout, with Smith's conversion taking his personal tally to 14 points.
Wigan coach Shaun Wane:
"I knew we would bounce back. We don't normally come up with regular poor performances.
"I knew the players were hurting and they didn't like seeing my face like it was the past week. I don't think they could stand another week like that.
"I seriously mean that, they will have been sick of me moaning at them. We've done exactly what we needed to do and came up with some outstanding tries."
Castleford coach Daryl Powell:
"I thought we were pretty unlucky tonight in lots of ways. Wigan came at us with a lot of intent and some of the things they did we didn't handle real well.
"Wigan ramped up physically and they were better than us tonight with the ball, but I do think we were a little bit better than the scoreline suggested.
"We worked really hard but made too many errors which is disappointing, but sometimes you have to cop a defeat on the chin and tonight is one of those nights."
