Super League: London Broncos 24-40 Widnes Vikings
- Published
Widnes Vikings recorded a routine victory over winless London Broncos.
The Vikings led 18-8 at the break thanks to tries from Patrick Ah Van, Hep Cahill and Danny Galea, with Denny Solomona touching down for the hosts.
The visitors coasted home in the second half with Rhys Hanbury and Paddy Flynn scoring two tries apiece.
With the game beyond them the Broncos showed some tenacity to close the gap with James Greenwood, Atelea Vea and Matt Cook going over.
The victory ended Widnes' five-match winless run and put more room between them and ninth-placed Hull KR in the battle for play-off places.
It was the Broncos who were first on the scoreboard, Josh Drinkwater landing the first of four kicks with a fifth-minute penalty.
The visitors recovered and Ah Van collected a Kevin Brown chip before Cahill charged in from a Jon Clarke pass and Galea burst through a gap in the defence, Danny Tickle converting all three tries.
London gave themselves a lifeline in the game when Solomona touched down in the corner on the stroke of half-time.
Any hope of a comeback was short-lived though as Hanbury touched down for his first from an Ah Van pass and Flynn grabbed his first score after breaking three tackles, then went over for a second time from a Brown chip.
The hosts kept going and Greenwood and Vea went over in quick succession to bring London to within 16.
Hanbury raced away to score his second before Broncos skipper Cook had the final say with a last-minute try.
London coach Joey Grima:
"We do tend to come back, but it's not a question of fighting back too late. It's a question of playing for 80 minutes, and again we were unable to do that.
"Combined with 12 or 13 errors, we're a long way off our first win after today's performance.
"It's disappointing as it wasn't through brilliance on their part, just basic skill on ours, fundamental under-six level stuff, which is very frustrating as a coach."
Widnes Vikings coach Denis Betts:
"You have to give credit to the Broncos today. They kept coming at us throughout the game and made us work for our points.
"They have a good coach there. I spoke to him before the game and he's getting things in place for a really solid base to build from.
"You can sense that from them, but when you're losing it's really hard to break that cycle. After 18 games without a win it's not a nice place to be."
