Four Nations: England can beat Australia - Jason Robinson

England can beat world champions Australia for the first time in 19 years in the Four Nations on Sunday, says ex-winger Jason Robinson.

Robinson was part of the side that defeated the Kangaroos in 1995.

"They definitely can do it," he told BBC Sport. "So often we've come close and now it's time for England to go one step further and beat the big boys."

England beat Samoa 32-26 in their opening match, while Australia lost 30-12 to New Zealand.

After New Zealand scored a late try to defeat Samoa on Saturday, England will secure their place in the final on 15 November with victory over Australia in Melbourne, a result which would knock the co-hosts out.

Defeat by New Zealand last weekend ended Australia's 17-game unbeaten run, and they are missing 10 players against England from the side that beat the Kiwis in May.

"They do have a few injuries, which doesn't make them as strong," 40-year-old Robinson, who won the rugby union World Cup with England in 2003, told BBC sports editor Dan Roan.

"They are a wounded team but they do have strength in depth, so it's going to be a massive game."

England's Sam Tomkins said: "We are going there to win and not just compete for 60 minutes, like we have done before against the Aussies.

"They have got a quality side and I'm sure they'll come out and do their best to beat us, but we'll be prepared for that.

"The squad we have at the moment is an exciting squad."

England captain Sean O'Loughlin missed the victory over Samoa with a quad injury and was omitted from Steve McNamara's provisional squad against Australia.

However, Matty Smith, who has been passed fit after an ankle problem, said Wigan team-mate O'Loughlin could be fit to start.
