Super League: Castleford Tigers 16-24 Huddersfield Giants

Eorl Crabtree scored a controversial late try and Danny Brough kicked four conversions to give Huddersfield a hard-fought win at Castleford.

Neither side could score in the first 20 minutes but the visitors then took control with tries from Craig Huby, Aaron Murphy and Ukuma Ta'ai.

Jake Webster's reply was followed by tries from Ben Roberts and Michael Shenton to cut the gap to 18-16.

But Crabtree's late effort proved decisive for the visitors.

The prop forced his way over the line among a crowd of players and the video referee watched several replays before awarding the try.

Both teams were trying to bounce back from disappointing Challenge Cup exits last weekend and it showed as little happened in the opening quarter.

The match belatedly sprung into life when former Tigers player Huby collected a pass from Kruise Leeming and opened the scoring.

Brough then set up Murphy to score in the corner on his 150th appearance before centre Webster replied after a series of penalties - although Luke Gale missed the conversion.

Ta'ia charged through the defence to restore Huddersfield's 14-point advantage at the break but Castleford improved in the second half.

Roberts had an early try ruled out before producing a valid solo effort and then skipper Shenton wrong-footed the Giants defence to score - and with two successful Gale conversions, the gap was down to two points.

But Crabtree had the final say, much to the anger of the home fans.

Castleford coach Daryl Powell, speaking about the new rule where video referees have to find evidence if they are to rule out a try given by a referee:

"I disagree with the system. It makes it difficult for video referees, probably impossible.

"There are a lot of things going against us but, having said that, there are areas we need to fix up.

"We gave away too many penalties and conceded some soft tries. The boys worked really hard and hung in to give ourselves a chance but there were some really disappointing things.

"Frankie Mariano has done his ACL so it's a pretty tough injury for us."

Huddersfield coach Paul Anderson:

"You only complain when the decisions go against you, don't you? I'm not complaining because they've gone for us.

"I feel for Daryl but the thing is the referee on the field thought they were tries and it's hard for the video referees (to overturn them).

"I thought for 40 minutes we were pretty good. We controlled things, got into a grind and came up with some tries.

"We said at half-time that their coach would get into them and we'd have to just stay in our processes. Unfortunately we didn't but I'm very happy at coming here and getting a win. They turned Wigan over by 40 points here.

"There was some controversy but we'll take it. As the season goes on, you get some and lose some."
