Super League: Castleford 17-16 Warrington

Liam Finn's late drop-goal secured a dramatic one-point win for Castleford over Warrington in Super League.

The home side led 12-6 at half-time as tries for Justin Carney and Michael Shenton put them in control, before Richie Myler hit back for Warrington.

After Shenton's second try increased the gap, Myler ran the length of the field to give the visitors hope.

Chris Sandow converted Kevin Penny's try to level for Warrington, before Finn held his nerve in the 79th minute.

Daryl Powell's Castleford move above Huddersfield into fourth position, although the Giants will regain fourth spot if they beat Catalans Dragons on Friday.

Warrington had thrashed Castleford 44-6 less than three weeks ago

Castleford's victory also created a six-point gap to sixth-placed Warrington, whose chances of a top-four finish are fading.

Carney finished off a free-flowing move from right to left to score his 16th Super League try of the season and Luke Gale's kick gave the hosts a six-point lead.

But Gale was less accurate when Shenton, who scored four in last week's victory over Hull FC, nipped in and cut inside to go over.

Ashton Sims set up Myler from close range and Sandow added the extras to close the gap, but Gale's penalty ensured Castleford led by six at the break.

The hosts made a perfect start to the second half when Shenton patted down Finn's kick and Oliver Holmes set up Carney for his second try.

But Warrington hit back as scrum-half Myler ran the length of the pitch to score and winger Penny went over in the corner with three minutes to go.

But that was not the end of the drama, as Finn held his nerve to win it for the hosts.

Castleford coach Daryl Powell:

"It was a bit crazy at the end. We did well to win that with them having the ascendancy and a real big reason to win that game.

"I thought we had a bit of a hand in getting them back into it and they've got enough quality players to take advantage, but for sheer guts and effort tonight the players were superb.

"They belted us good and proper the last time we played them. They were just too good for us but tonight defensively we were superb and worked so hard for each other."

Warrington coach Tony Smith:

"A draw would probably have been a fair reflection, but enthusiasm is a huge thing and they out-enthused us."

On his side's top-four prospects, he added: "I haven't done the maths. Regardless, when you play rugby league you play to win. That's what we'll be doing again next Friday against Wigan.

"Nothing changes in terms of eagerness to perform well and win games."
