Brett Ferres: Leeds Rhinos back-rower banned for six games for 'crusher tackle'

Leeds back-rower Brett Ferres has been banned for six games for a 'crusher' tackle on Wigan centre Oliver Gildart by an independent disciplinary panel.

Ferres, 30, was found guilty of the Rugby Football League's Grade E dangerous tackle charge, which occurred in Friday's Super League win.

He has been fined £300 and, in addition to domestic games, misses England's mid-season Test against Samoa.

His first game back could be Leeds' fixture against Castleford on 21 May.

The 'crusher' tackle is one which sees excessive pressure placed on the neck in contact.

The England international had apologised to Gildart on social media, who has been ruled out for up to three months with what coach Shaun Wane described as a "serious back injury"

Meanwhile, Leigh prop forward Jamie Acton has been suspended for one game and fined £300 for a Grade A dangerous contact with fellow front-rower Manase Manuoakafoa, in Saturday's defeat by Widnes.

Centurions winger Adam Higson submitted an early guilty plea and avoids suspension.
