Sam Tomkins kicked a stunning drop-goal as Wigan staged a late fightback to secure a dramatic 9-8 win in a tight game at Super League champions Leeds.

Rhinos led 8-0 with eight minutes left thanks to Tom Briscoe's converted try and a Kallum Watkins penalty.

Oliver Gildart went over in the corner to give Wigan hope.

Tomkins kicked the touchline conversion and a penalty to level the score before slotting over a sweetly-struck long-range drop-goal to win it for Warriors.

Leeds half-back Richie Myler then attempted a drop-goal himself to try to earn a draw but, under pressure from Wigan captain Sean O'Loughlin, his effort dropped wide of the posts.

After recovering from 21 points behind to win at Catalans Dragons last weekend, Wigan's second successive comeback win leaves them two points behind early leaders St Helens, who travel to Wakefield on Sunday.

Fourth-placed Leeds edged a first half littered with errors by capitalising on the only clear try-scoring opportunity when Myler's well-timed pass put Briscoe in unchallenged in the corner.

Wigan survived 10 minutes with Sam Powell in the sin-bin for a tackle on Ashton Golding early in the second half without Leeds scoring, but they looked to be heading to defeat when Watkins extended the hosts' lead from the tee.

Their hopes of a comeback were boosted when Gildart took Liam Farrell's pass to score before Tomkins took centre stage to earn Wigan their first victory at Leeds since 2012.

Leeds coach Brian McDermott told BBC Radio Leeds: "It was an error-ridden game and I didn't think there was much from both teams in attack.

"I thought we were great defensively for the majority of the game but we went 8-0 up and started playing crazy, started defending differently and we started to back off, allowing Wigan to go 70 metres per set.

"I'm really disappointed we lost but our task, next time we're in that situation, is to be better managing a tight game."

Wigan coach Shaun Wane told BBC Radio Manchester: "This team will never give up, they will always keep fighting and they know how to win big games.

"This is a touch place to come and we've not got a great record here but to turn up and play the way we did was an outstanding effort.

"I thought there were a few good performances but Sam Tomkins was outstanding. I'm happy with the way we ground out the win."
