Super League side Wakefield hit back to cruise past Championship side Widnes into the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

Widnes led in a bright start when Lloyd Roby dived on to Danny Craven's clever kick and Jack Owens added the goal.

Trinity levelled the scores at the break through Max Jowitt, who went over after a fine Craig Kopczak offload.

David Fifita's solo try put the hosts ahead before Ben Jones-Bishop, Lee Kershaw and Justin Horo sealed victory after full-back Owens was sent off.

Widnes were trailing by just six points before Owens was red carded 16 minutes from time for using foul and abusive language to a touch judge - and the hosts cashed in with three tries in the last seven minutes.

Wakefield boss Chris Chester:

"That's 80 minutes of my life I'll never get back. I'm really disappointed with the performance. We're in the next round but we aren't going to get into the semi-finals playing like that.

"We had people trying to throw the ball out of their backsides. We were completing at 30-odd per cent in the first 15 minutes. But credit to Widnes, they were good. They looked like the Super League team in the first 30 minutes.

"Big Dave [Fifita] does what he wants but I'd rather leave the kicking to the kickers. It changed the momentum of the game but we can't keep relying on individuals."

Widnes boss Kieron Purtill:

"If Jack Owens said something to the touch judge, you can't condone that but it would be interesting if we had had a video referee to see the outcome of some of the other calls.

"It's a long way from behind the sticks but Jack certainly thought he was tackled and the ball was taken out.

"Ultimately we've got to look at what we did during the game and there were a lot of good things.

"The scoreline blew out at the end but but I'm proud of the effort. We went toe to toe with a Super League team. We have to take that attitude and desire into every single game."
