A late Jake Connor try gave Hull FC victory at Castleford in a feisty game.

Cameron Scott and Jordan Johnstone went over for the visitors and Mike McMeeken and Greg Eden for the hosts in an even first half.

Chris Satae charged in for the away side before Grant Millington powered over for the Tigers.

Debutant Ben McNamara scored for Hull before McMeeken's second and Michael Shenton's try looked to have won it for Cas only for Connor to snatch it.

Connor's late intervention made it a losing a return to Wheldon Road for Castleford, who were playing on their home pitch for the first time since March.

A fourth successive Super League defeat for Daryl Powell's men leaves their chances of reaching the top four all but over.

They nearly mounted a terrific comeback from 26-16 down after McNamara, son of Catalans coach Steve, had gone over for Andy Last's team but Connor capped off a fine individual performance to touch down from Marc Sneyd's kick.

Castleford head coach Daryl Powell:

"It's really tough at the minute, we're losing games by marginal decisions and by marginal points differential.

"There were a couple of class bits of play at the end from Sneyd and Connor but I can't fault our boys for how hard they are working.

"We're trying to find a way through a really difficult situation. I think we've been super unlucky but I can't fault the commitment of the players."

Hull FC interim head coach Andy Last:

"It's a team that is frustrating to watch. They don't seem to be learning the valuable lessons we need to. Panic set in and we made hard work of it.

"But, in terms of grit and character, they were sensational. I'm just pleased we got the result.

(On McNamara) "He has a real good attitude and wants to learn. He's a great young man with a level head on his shoulders.

"We've a lot of confidence in him, we feel he has a good future with us."
