Wigan's win against Warrington moves them up to second in Super League

Liam Farrell's 75th-minute try helped Wigan Warriors edge to a narrow victory over Warrington to boost their top-four hopes in Super League.

Warrington took an early lead thanks to a penalty try after Matty Ashton was taken out by Wigan's Dom Manfredi.

Chris Hill crashed over soon after to extend Wire's lead but Wigan's Joe Greenwood touched down moments later.

Zak Hardaker levelled right after the break for Wigan before Farrell ran in the winning try in a tight second half.

The victory moves Wigan up to second in the Super League table, behind leaders St Helens.

Meanwhile, Warrington drop out of the top four by virtue of Catalans' comfortable victory against Hull KR earlier on Friday and this defeat damaging their win percentage.

Wigan came into the match off the back of three positive coronavirus tests within their ranks in the past week, while both sides had lost in the Challenge Cup semi-finals last weekend.

Prop Brad Singleton made his first Wigan appearance since joining following Toronto's withdrawal from Super League and played his part as his new side battled to get back on level terms after Warrington's fine start.

In a tense second half, Warrington won a penalty deep in Wigan's half but opted to go for two points instead of driving for what could have been a decisive try.

Ultimately they failed to hold on to their lead for the second game in a row, after their narrow Challenge Cup defeat by Salford, as Farrell picked a perfect line to cross after being fed by replacement half-back Harry Smith.

Warrington Wolves boss Steve Price:

"We're learning some harsh lessons at the moment and it's important we do learn from them. It's quite tough at present.

"We've a strong group of men who are hurting and I'd be disappointed if they weren't but we're not far away.

"I was extremely proud of the effort and intent of the boys. We got off to a really good start and created a lot of opportunities to put ourselves in a position to win the game. We just couldn't execute.

"We're just beating ourselves up at times, concentration lapses you could say."

Wigan Warriors head coach Adrian Lam:

"I lost my voice at one stage. It's a big win for us, especially after the disappointment of last weekend. We were embarrassed and couldn't get to Friday quick enough.

"Not being able to train early in the week because of Covid and having to shuffle the team, I was always nervous.

"I just wanted them to have a bit of success together after last week. I thought tonight we weren't pretty but we were resilient.

"The talk at half-time was positive, there was a good feel about it. I thought we could have killed the game a little earlier but we hung in there and got a simple try at the end to win it."
