Marc Sneyd's penalty goal edged Hull FC to victory over Huddersfield Giants in a see-sawing Super League tussle.

Ratu Naulago and Mahe Fonua tries put the Black and Whites in front at the halfway stage, with Jermaine McGillvary's try in reply for Giants.

Matty English and Aidan Sezer both hauled Huddersfield back into it, after Bureta Faraimo had given Hull the lead for the third time in between.

Sneyd landed a goal after Sezer's drop-goal flew wide to secure the win.

Either side could have won in a close-fought game, punctuated by little patches of niggle and played at rip-roaring pace in front of an empty stadium.

Hull started in rapid-fire fashion, and hit Huddersfield on the edges with their big strike players such as Josh Griffin and Fonua, a tactic Andy Last's side used to their advantage.

Their crash-and-bash, particularly out on the left, proved a useful weapon and created two of the three tries down that channel.

Under interim boss Luke Robinson, Huddersfield have been far more resolute and kept showing character to come back.

There were flashes of the old international combination between Leroy Cudjoe and try-scorer McGillvary while Sezer was his usual busy self despite missing the late drop which might have nicked the points.

Hull, in seventh, move level on points with sixth-placed Huddersfield.

Hull FC interim head coach Andy Last:

"It was a tough game. The two teams were desperate. The first 40 minutes were high quality, both teams completed at a high rate and the boys at half time spoke about how quick the game was.

"Over the course of 80 minutes there were some good bits and some we need to get better at.

"It keeps the season alive, we spoke about that, we want to try and win every game."

Huddersfield interim head coach Luke Robinson:

"You'd like to think the percentages will be in our favour to win the next one. They are obviously hard to take when you get beat by one or two points.

"We've got to find a way. Professional rugby league is a game of inches, there are fine margins and, when the pressure is on, you've got to find a way of managing it better."

On debutant hooker Brandon Moore:

"He's a roofer who has been stuck on a roof for the last few weeks. We're very fortunate that he works for his father-in-law and he's given him time off to come and play with us.

"He didn't know the lads or any of the calls up to a month ago, so he's a credit. He's really eager to learn and he's as fit as a fiddle. He's part-time but he's as fit as anybody in the whole squad. I thought he was amazing."
