Jake Bibby scored the first hat-trick of his career to help Wigan make it two Super League wins from two as they cruised to a 34-6 win over Wakefield.

David Fifita crossed to put Wakefield ahead but Oliver Partington's try sent Wigan in level at the break.

Early in the second half, Bibby touched down in the corner before Zak Hardaker raced clear for an emphatic try.

Bibby scored twice more in the final 20 minutes, either side of John Bateman's try, to wrap up a comfortable win.

The match, which along with all of this week's fixtures took place at St Helens' Totally Wicked Stadium, resulted in Wakefield's second defeat of the season after their loss to Leeds last week.

Despite a fine first-half performance to hold last season's Grand Finalists, Wakefield's task was made harder when the talismanic Tom Johnstone was ruled out 29 minutes in after failing a head injury assessment.

Wigan, who lost new signing Jai Field to a long-term hamstring injury in last week's win over newcomers Leigh, welcomed back Jackson Hastings for his first game of the season following an extended trip home to Australia.

The Cherry and Whites came back from 18-0 down to beat Leigh but this was a more assured performance by Adrian Lam's side.

Hardaker's second-half try came following good build-up work from Hastings and Liam Farrell, who offloaded for the Wigan full-back to power through, before Bibby completed a memorable hat-trick as he played havoc with the Wakefield back line.

Wigan head coach Adrian Lam told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I had a good feeling about the game. Watching us physically from the start, we were there to play and I was really confident that whatever tries or points they got, we could run that down.

"We had a few opportunities in the first half that we just couldn't nail and I couldn't wait until half-time and explain to them why that's happening.

"Jake Bibby getting a hat-trick was outstanding for him. The execution down the right side was really first class. I'm pleased for him and the group."

Wakefield boss Chris Chester told BBC Radio Leeds:

"We had some really good control in the first 40 minutes and we dominated field position. We didn't kick the ball well.

"Our end of sets weren't great. Losing Tom Johnstone to a high shot didn't help. We had to rejig everything in terms of that left edge and put young James Batchelor out in the centre.

"They executed some decent plays on our left edge but that second 40 minutes was just not good enough. We have to defend a lot tougher for longer than we are doing and work harder for 80 minutes. We didn't match Wigan's energy in the second half."
