Castleford Tigers bounced back from their first defeat of the season by Wigan last week to see off Salford Red Devils, inspired by Paul McShane.

The Tigers edged a first half of two tries apiece as Danny Richardson kicked three goals, including a late penalty goal, to establish a 14-12 lead.

Cheyse Blair and Jake Trueman crossed after the break, as Daryl Powell's Tigers stamped their authority.

Tui Lolohea's score gave Salford hope but Castleford held out.

The two sides meet again in next weekend's Challenge Cup quarter final, live on BBC Two from 17:30 BST on Saturday.

There was much to enjoy about Castleford's best moments, as hooker and reigning Man of Steel McShane was a devastating presence, keeping the tempo from dummy half and providing bright sparks alongside fellow spine players Richardson and Trueman.

Richardson put a superb kick into space for Greg Eden's score, and after smart scores for Kevin Brown and Danny Ackers put Salford ahead, McShane made a break which was eventually finished off by Liam Watts.

Blair dived over after another short kick into the in-goal to put Cas further ahead after half-time and Trueman snapped up a superb offload from Peter Mata'utia to score.

The only sour note for the Tigers was the loss to injury of Eden and Nathan Massey, with injuries already robbing the club of key personnel such as Gareth O'Brien.

Salford showed signs of their improvement in the first half but it was not until late in the second that they offered resistance through Lolohea's try from a Brown kick.

But indiscipline, which left Lee Mossop in the sin-bin for 10 key minutes, gave Cas chances to kick for goal and tick the scoreboard over, and put more pressure on their defensive line.
