Leeds Rhinos battled back to beat winless Wakefield Trinity in Super League thanks to Rhyse Martin's penalty in golden-point extra time.

Tries from Liam Kay and Mason Lino gave the visitors an 8-0 lead before Martin got Leeds on the scoreboard.

Konrad Hurrell charged over to put the Rhinos in front after the break.

After Lino kicked a penalty to level the scores, he and Gale exchanged drop-goals, before Martin kicked his penalty to win it.

Trinity's Jay Pitts was penalised for stripping the ball from King Vuniyayawa after Hurrell's line-break had got the Rhinos up the pitch and Martin was left with a straightforward kick.

Chris Chester's men have now lost nine successive games going back to last season, and this was the first match in this campaign that they had led in at the break.

They made the most of some lax Rhinos defending for their two first-half tries, with Lino's a gift after Ash Handley had failed to pick up a low kick through.

The Rhinos finally made their pressure tell when Martin got over and Hurrell powered in after they moved the ball well.

This was only their second league victory of the season, with both coming against Wakefield.

Leeds head coach Richard Agar:

"I thought it had elements of craziness to it. There were way, way too many errors and brain explosions.

"Every time we felt we had an opportunity to pull away from them we did something ridiculous.

"The positive is that defensively we looked pretty good most of the night.

"We shot ourselves in the foot multiple times with penalties and dumb, crazy errors but I always felt we had a strong desire to win the game."

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester:

"I'm proud of their efforts. I've told them to hold their heads high.

"We are lacking some key personnel and a bit of quality but these blokes are trying their hardest. They're running their blood to water and I think our luck will hopefully change shortly.

"Our defence was fantastic but we just did too much of it."
