Huddersfield Giants held off a spirited Warrington Wolves comeback for their second Super League win of the season.

The Giants persistently found gaps in the Wire defence, with two Lee Gaskell tries helping them to a 20-0 lead.

Warrington scored three in the second half to cut the deficit to two points, but a well-timed Kenny Edwards try allowed the visitors to hang on.

The game saw 4,000 fans return to the Halliwell Jones Stadium for the first time since March 2020.

Huddersfield made the perfect start when a flowing move saw Gaskell get the ball over the line after collecting Darnell McIntosh's pass following Ricky Leutele's break.

Moments later, Gaskell was found in space on the right and capitalised to score again after Wire second-row Ben Currie gave away possession.

Warrington struggled to deal with their opposition's pace in attack as Jermaine McGillvary slid over unchallenged for a try which put him equal seventh on the Super League all-time scorers list.

Aidan Sezer's penalty kick then made it 20-0 at half-time, but it was a different story after the break.

Roared on by fans, Greg Inglis rolled away from three defenders and forced his way over, before Daryl Clark pounced after a penalty to score.

Gareth Widdop's kick cut Giants' advantage to six, and then Josh Thewlis flew over in the corner to put a comeback in sight for the hosts.

But a timely response saw Edwards weave his way through following Sezer's incisive pass to guarantee back-to-back wins for Ian Watson's side.

Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price:

"Our first-half performance was not a true reflection of how we have been going recently.

"We showed a lot of character in the second half to get back into the game and have an opportunity to win it at the back end.

"I'm sorry we couldn't get the win for the fans because it was a special day to get them back and they have been crying out for their fix of rugby league."

Huddersfield Giants head coach Ian Watson told BBC Radio Leeds:

"It was a great, great atmosphere, the Warrington supporters were outstanding in terms of the noise they made.

"As soon as Warrington got a little bit of momentum, I think it just gave them an extra 5-10%.

"Second half, we had to do quite a lot of defending, the momentum swung a little bit and we just need to be better at dealing with that going forward, but an outstanding win."
