Wakefield Trinity gave their survival hopes another big boost as they backed up last weekend's stunning victory over Wigan by winning at Hull FC.

Winger Lewis Murphy scored three of Wakefield's five tries, aided by scores for Lee Kershaw and Liam Hood.

The Black and Whites' three tries came from Ben McNamara in the first half, then Ellis Longstaff and Chris Satae.

Wakefield, now six points clear of bottom club Toulouse, have moved within four points of ninth-placed Hull.

On a night when Toulouse were hammered at Wigan, Wakefield's third win in four matches all but secures their Super League safety for next season, while pushing this year's French newcomers closer to relegation.

It was a fifth defeat in six games for Brett Hodgson's Hull - and a fourth consecutive home loss - on a night when they were again left counting the cost of missing players.

Having lost Jack Walker and Darnell McIntosh on Thursday for the rest of the season with "substantial injuries", Hodgson revealed afterwards that he has also now lost Manu Ma'u (broken arm) and Joe Lovodua (posterior cruciate ligament knee injury).

Trinity struck first through Murphy, who dived over acrobatically for a stunning one-hand try in the left corner, and they then doubled their tally down the other flank through Kershaw.

Hull did hit back through McNamara, who dived on a messily spilled ball behind the line to score before Wakefield had the final say of the first half when a high kick ricocheted forward off Lee Gaskell's head for Murphy to score again and engineer a 10-point lead at the break.

Wakefield made a flying start to the second half when Hood followed up Corey Hall's off-load in the in-goal, before Murphy completed his hat-trick when he mopped up a loose ball from Gaskell.

He then had a fourth try ruled out by the video referee before Hull's two late consolation scores from Longstaff, his fifth try in seven games, and Satae - but that came too late to prevent a third loss to Wakefield in their last four meetings.

Hull boss Brett Hodgson:

"It's tough. We've had absolutely no luck again. Manu Ma'u broke his arm and Joe Lovodua has done his PCL. We lost two more to head knocks as well, which really disrupted us.

"This is what happens when you're where we are at the moment. You look at the squad that we've got playing. We named our 41st player in our squad this week.

"We're really hurting, as are the fans. But I wouldn't concern ourselves with play-offs at the minute, Our for and against is at a stage where we'd needed to win all four remaining games, but it's just about trying to finish on a high."

Wakefield coach Willie Poching:

"It's good for any winger to score those tries, but that wasn't the most pleasing part for me for Lewis Murphy. I asked him to get his work rate really high and I couldn't have asked for more. He's undoubtedly got great finishing qualities, but we're trying to fashion him into a great all-round winger.

"I also have to credit our middles, who did a really good job, especially after losing Jai Whitbread early on. Josh Bowden and Tinirau Arona were particularly good.

"They're all big wins for us in the context of where we are and how the season has been. It doesn't make us quite safe, but we had enough about us."

Hull FC: Smith; Barron, Longstaff, Wynne, Vulikijapani; McNamara, Gale; Taylor, Lovodua, Sao, Ma'u, Lane, Fash.

Interchanges: Houghton, Laidlaw, Litten, Satae.

Wakefield: Jowitt; Kershaw, Croft, Gaskell, Murphy; Lino, Miller; Bowden, Hall, Ashurst, Whitbread, Hood, Arona.
