Leeds Rhinos co-captain Cameron Smith will miss the remainder of the Super League season and the play-offs with a back injury.
The 26-year-old forward has not featured since the win over Salford Red Devils on 18 July.
"He's got a disc bulge there that is pretty nasty and we need to look at what the long-term fix for him is," head coach Brad Arthur said.
"I'm disappointed but he wants to be able to play at full health and he's probably had that back issue for a good period over his career."
