Fit-again Edinburgh fly-half Phil Godman has been called into the Scotland squad for the opening two games of the Six Nations championship.

The 29-year-old is cover for Ruaridh Jackson, who has not yet returned to match action after picking up an injury of his own earlier this month.

Godman was delighted to return after a year-long absence with a knee injury.

"You always think about getting back into it for the club but also about playing for Scotland as well," he said.

"It's just great to be back playing for Edinburgh and to be back involved with Scotland."

Godman, who won the last of his 23 caps in the Six Nations against opening Six Nations opponents England, has been in and out of the Edinburgh starting line-up since returning to action in September.

However, he showed his worth when he came on as a substitute to score a late drop goal that earned Edinburgh a crucial Heineken Cup victory over Racing Metro in Paris at the weekend.

Now he will join the Scotland squad, who begin their campaign at home to England on 4 February before facing Wales in Cardiff eight days later, when it meets up next week in St Andrews.

Jackson suffered his leg injury during Glasgow Warriors' Pro12 match defeat by Scarlets in Llanelli.

There is also uncertainty about London Irish centre Steven Shingler's place in Scotland squad.

The Scots have appealed against an International Rugby Board ruling that Shingler is tied to Wales, who had challenged Andy Robinson's decision to call-up the player who has a Scottish mother.
