Wales' Sevens team were comfortably beaten 31-12 in their IRB Scotland Sevens plate final by clinical Samoa.

Richard Smith and Ifan Evans did touch down but a hat-trick by Tom Iosefo inspired a Samoan victory while Taulagi Afamasaga and Ken Pisi also scored.

Tom Grabham and Sion Bennett had scored as Wales secured their final place by defeating Argentina 12-5 in extra time.

Pool D leaders Wales had gone into the cup competition but dropped into the plate after losing 17-7 to Australia.

Rhys Shellard and Lee Williams both scored three tries as Wales finished top of Pool D with a 100% record after beating South Africa 17-5, defeating Russia 31-5 before concluding with a win over hosts Scotland 17-14 in Glasgow.
