Argentina international Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino is in line to make his debut for Cardiff Blues in the Pro12 clash against Munster on Saturday.
The 28-year-old utility back, who can play at wing or full-back, has yet to play since joining the Welsh region in September.
He will stay until the end of the season, but was not signed in time to be able to play for Blues in Europe.
"He'll be in the squad somewhere," said Blues director of rugby Mark Hammett.
"We'd like to get him started. He's worked hard and I know he's as keen as anyone to get started."
Amorosino has won 38 caps for Argentina since his debut in 2009 and played in the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The player, who has had spells with Leicester Tigers and Montpellier, has impressed Hammett in training.
"We've seen his skills and there's no doubt he'll offer us something," said the New Zealander.
"But it's like any player in their first game, it takes time to adjust to the competition, to the style.
"I'm not expecting him to set the world on fire, I'd love it if he did, but we want to support him through the first few games with us rather than he has an expectation that he has to win games for us."
His arrival at the Arms Park comes as Blues also prepare to welcome another versatile back in New Zealand-born, Welsh-qualified Gareth Anscombe.
Hammett revealed Anscombe will join up with Blues around 10-12 November.
He said that outside-half Rhys Patchell meanwhile is "50-50" to feature against Munster after injuring his shoulder in the 33-18 win against Rovigo.
