Scotland v New Zealand: Greig Laidlaw sore after late penalty miss

Captain Greig Laidlaw described Scotland's 24-16 defeat by New Zealand as "tough to take" after missing a crucial penalty at Murrayfield.

With the score poised at 16-17, Laidlaw could have put Scotland ahead going into the last 10 minutes.

The All Blacks capitalised with a converted try that ended hopes for a first Scottish win over New Zealand.

"We played some fantastic rugby at times, but all said and done we're clearly disappointed," said Laidlaw.

"All credit to the All Blacks, they play for 80 minutes every time they take the field and they got a late try to take the game away from us.

"The boys stuck to it. We've got to look at the positives and take them away from this game. We put up a solid performance, we just came up short."

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter expressed sympathy for his captain.

"I feel sorry for Greig," said the New Zealander. "If it had gone over and we'd gone in front then you never know but it didn't and then we let them get back over the line.

"They're disappointed and sometimes it's the way things go but it wasn't for lack of courage and effort.

"The players showed the standards they want to set when they're wearing this jersey and in front of their crowd."

The Scots complete their autumn series against Tonga at Rugby Park next Saturday.

"There's a genuine intent in carrying the ball, attacking, keeping the ball alive and stretching defences," added Cotter.

"The players enjoy it. I want the players to enjoy what they're doing and people to come and see the players enjoy themselves.

"It's something I see developing within the group."
