Cornish Pirates: Gavin Cattle takes positives from Rotherham defeat

Cornish Pirates are struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table

Cornish Pirates coach Gavin Cattle said the 21-13 away loss at Rotherham was a step in the right direction after last week's heavy home defeat by Nottingham.

Pirates have won two of seven games in the Championship and lie second-bottom.

"Last week was probably the first blip we've had but we're back on track with our non-negotiables, our work rate and passion, and that was clear to see," Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"We had glimpses of really good stuff. We just need to get more clinical."

Cattle added: "It's massively frustrating - we were in the game right until the death and their kicker slotted a kick at the end to deny us a bonus point.

"But to take the positives, I'm pleased with how we applied ourselves in a really hard-fought match.

"I think Rotherham would be first to admit it could have gone either way. We just didn't pick up on a couple of opportunities when we had momentum and they did.

"We were very disappointed after Nottingham and although all defeats are disappointing you can't complain about how the boys applied themselves against Rotherham. They played for the shirt as they always do.

"It's good to see the boys with a bit more belief. There are some youngsters getting some really good experience."
