Leicester Tigers' Welsh outside-half Owen Williams should talk to Wales coach Warren Gatland before deciding his future, says former dual-code star Jonathan Davies.

Scarlets are interested in signing the 22-year-old, but the Tigers are confident of keeping the player they signed in 2013.

Pundit Davies says the fly-half should "talk to the right people" first.

"Maybe Warren Gatland could be one of those people," said Davies.

"He plays in front of a full crowd every week [at Leicester]. It's a great atmosphere and that's a lot when you're a professional rugby player."

Davies told BBC Wales Sport it is important for Williams to consider exactly what he wants before deciding where his future lies.

"What's his ambition? Does he increase his chances of playing for Wales playing for the Scarlets?

"He's just got to sit down and decide what's best for Owen Williams and maybe talk to the right people and maybe Warren Gatland could be one of those people."

Since leaving the Scarlets for the Midlands, Williams has broken into the Leicester team.

He was regularly selected ahead of the now-departed England fly-half Toby Flood last season and has maintained his position as first choice in spite of the arrival of another England number 10, Freddie Burns, from Gloucester.

Uncapped Williams had been tipped to win his first senior cap on Wales' June 2013 tour to South Africa, but a suspension prevented him from being named in the squad.

He underlined his credentials for a Wales call-up by scoring 20 points in a fine European Champions Cup win over Toulon last weekend.

The Welsh management want international players to be based in Wales.

In November, it was announced that 12 players were to be offered dual contracts by the Welsh Rugby Union, in a bid to keep top talent from leaving the country.

The list has been drawn up by Gatland, who has worked closely with the Ospreys, Newport Gwent Dragons, Cardiff Blues and Scarlets.

Dan Lydiate became the second player to sign such a deal, joining the Ospreys on Tuesday.
