Newport Gwent Dragons director of rugby Lyn Jones says Taulupe Faletau's place in the side is not guaranteed.
The British and Irish Lions back row has not started for the region since playing in Wales' 12-6 win over South Africa in November.
Jones wants to see Faletau, who came off the bench in the 69-17 win over Bucharest Wolves, to improve.
"The challenge for Toby is to become a good team player for us, but firstly he has to get on the team sheet," he said.
Lewis Evans has impressed whilst filling in for Faletau when the 24-year-old was away on international duty.
The Dragons host Zebre in the Pro12 on Sunday, followed by two matches against Cardiff Blues (26 December and 1 January) and Ospreys away on 11 January.
Jones says Faletau who has won 40 caps for Wales, has a challenge on his hands to win back the number eight shirt for those matches.
"Toby had a tough autumn period with the national side and we've tried to look after him with his air time since then," said Jones.
"He came on at half time last week and was back to his speedy best.
"But the team has played well and one thing we've learned is that being a team is far better than having good individuals
"Selection at last is becoming difficult which is a great."
