Cardiff Blues: Gareth Anscombe will get better - Martyn Williams

Former Wales flanker Martyn Williams believes there is more to come from Cardiff Blues fly-half Gareth Anscombe.

The New Zealander was man of the match in his side's 11-9 New Year's Day Pro12 win against Newport Gwent Dragons.

Anscombe, 23, insists he still has a lot to learn before he thinks about Wales honours but Williams, who won 100 caps for Wales, is excited about his potential.

"He's only going to get better and better," said Williams.

Anscombe helped New Zealand Under-20s to the Junior World Championship in 2011, but qualifies for Wales through his mother.

He set up the only try of the match, kicked a drop-goal and a decisive 68th-minute penalty to help steer the Blues to victory at Rodney Parade.

The result moves his side up to eighth in the Pro12 table.

Former Cardiff Blues forward Williams says Anscombe "brought that extra bit of class", which helped tip the result in favour of the Blues.

"He just makes the right decisions at the right time," said Williams.

"He takes the ball to the line, he's a threat, he's quick and he's got great distribution."

Anscombe's pin-point pass led to centre Cory Allen scoring the only try of the tight south Wales derby.

Williams believes the outside-half is "in the mix" for the Wales number 10 jersey.

"We are pretty lucky in Wales," said Williams.

"We've got Dan Biggar in imperious form, Rhys Priestland seems to be coming back to his best and if you throw this lad into the mix as well... he made a huge difference in getting Blues over the line."
