Castres number eight Johnnie Beattie has been added to the Scotland squad ahead of next month's Six Nations after nine players sustained injuries.

Backs Alex Dunbar and Sean Maitland suffered knocks in Glasgow Warriors' European Cup defeat by Bath.

Edinburgh's Dave Denton, Ben Toolis, Dougie Fife, Greig Tonks and Matt Scott were injured during their Challenge Cup win over Bordeaux.

Glasgow's Rob Harley and Perpignan's Alasdair Strokosch are also injured.

Beattie, who scored a try in his club's European Champions Cup defeat by Harlequins on Saturday, has joined the Scotland squad ahead of a three-day camp at Motherwell's Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.

A statement said the 29-year-old, capped 34 times, had been called up to "reinforce the group" rather than replace any particular individual.

It added the nine injured players "will receive further assessment and treatment and will return to training this week as they become available".

Strokosch, 31, has a shoulder problem, while fellow flanker Harley, 24, missed Glasgow's 20-15 loss in Bath with knee and ankle problems.

Centre Dunbar, 24, was taken off with head knock in that game and is suffering from concussion, while 26-year-old full-back Maitland has a shoulder injury.

Denton, 24, injured a calf as Edinburgh reached the Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a 38-20 win over their French visitors, while fellow forward Toolis, 22, has a back problem.

Three Edinburgh backs were also injured, with 24-year-old Fife nursing a leg knock, Scott, 24, a sore shoulder, while 25-year-old Tonks was concussed.

Scotland begin their Six Nations campaign in France on 7 February.
