Six Nations 2015: Ref has 'big role' for Wales v England - McBryde

The scrum will again be a key area when Wales meet England in the Six Nations

Wales forwards coach Robin McBryde says referee Jerome Garces will have a "big role to play" in the Six Nations opener against England.

Wales have been boosted by the news that Scarlets prop Samson Lee will be fit to start the match on 6 February in Cardiff following a neck injury.

McBryde highlighted the scrum as an area where Frenchman Garces will be particularly influential.

"The man in the middle will have a big role to play," said McBryde.

"The last two games [against England] we have fallen on the wrong side of one referee and not on the other."

England head coach Stuart Lancaster sought "clarification" from World Rugby about referee Steve Walsh's display in the 30-3 loss to Wales in 2013.

Wales dominated the scrum on that occasion, but they came unstuck a year later as England won 29-18 at Twickenham.

Welsh prop Gethin Jenkins was sin-binned for a scrum offence as Warren Gatland's side were punished at set pieces by referee Romain Poite.

McBryde hopes Wales will fare better this time, having studied how Garces officiates matches.

"Looking at his [Garces] recent performances, I think he knows what he's looking for so we've got a good understanding of what he's looking for in the scrum," he added.

"We have got to be as legal as we can be and as effective as we can be."
