Wing Eli Walker can win a place in Wales' World Cup squad, according to his Ospreys head coach Steve Tandy.

The 23-year-old, who has one cap, is one of 38 players hoping to be included in Warren Gatland's final squad of 31.

The likes of George North, Alex Cuthbert and Hallam Amos are also vying for places on the wings.

"He's confident and he's got some tough competition but I think he's getting his head down and training hard," said Tandy of Walker.

"He's going to be there or thereabouts.

"It's great for the national coach to have real selection dilemmas going into a World Cup, which can only be a positive."

Walker made his long-awaited debut for Wales in the World Cup warm-up defeat by Ireland on 8 August.

He had been due to win his first cap against South Africa in November 2013 but was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Walker's explosive pace has made him prone to muscular injuries during his career but survived Gatland's first reduction of Wales' World Cup squad after an encouraging display against Ireland.

"He did himself a world of good against Ireland," Tandy told BBC Wales Sport.

"It's great for Eli to get the cap out of the way because it's been playing on him for 18 months or two years.

"Coming through the Ireland test is a massive boost of confidence for him."
