Scotland lost two of their three autumn Tests in 2013

Having opened their autumn series with a 42-17 victory over Japan, Scott Johnson's Scotland were given a stern lesson by a ruthless South Africa the following week, the Springboks winning 28-0.

Johnson approached the match against his native Australia hoping to atone for that four-try humbling on a much maligned Murrayfield pitch that would soon be torn up and replaced.

However, white line fever afflicted the Scots once again as Israel Folau and Chris Feauai-Sautia crossed for the Wallabies. Though Christian Leali'ifano missed five of his kicks, his conversion and three penalties were enough to keep the game out of Scotland's reach, with Greig Laidlaw kicking five penalties for the hosts.

While proud of his team's effort, Johnson said afterwards: "I'm sick of being good losers."

"There was no lack of passion and determination but both sides were guilty of some ugly play, with the scrum a mess and penalties galore"

Greig Laidlaw kept his nerve to kick Scotland to victory

Andy Robinson's side claimed Scotland's first away win over Australia in 30 years, the victory the highlight of a highly successful summer tour of three wins from three.

The result was not only welcome for the Englishman but badly needed following seven straight defeats, including a Six Nations whitewash earlier in the year.

Robinson later praised "the courage that we showed in defence" after the Scots repelled a dominant Wallabies side in the second half.

Mike Harris knocked over two penalties for the hosts but Greig Laidlaw's third successful penalty - the last kick of the game - sealed victory for the tourists.

"Facing a howling gale, Laidlaw managed to slam the ball between the sticks from 30 metres to spark scenes of wild celebration from the Scots"

Australia's fly-half missed a crucial late conversion

Whilst Scotland's performance was gallant, their first win over the Wallabies since 1982 will more likely be remembered for Matt Giteau's injury-time conversion miss.

Former England and Edinburgh head coach Robinson had recently taken over from Frank Hadden and opened his Scotland tenure with a solid autumn Test win over Fiji.

Giteau and Phil Godman exchanged penalties in the first half before Godman knocked over another after the break.

Chris Paterson's drop-goal gave the Scots a six-point advantage before Australia's Ryan Cross went over with the 80 minutes having passed but Giteau's conversion attempt drifted to the left of the posts, prompting wild celebrations from the home crowd at Murrayfield.

Robinson praised the performance, external as "the most courageous from a team I have ever been involved in".

"No-one had told the Scottish players that they were not supposed to win...and they put their bodies on the line to clinch one of the biggest upsets of recent times"
