Ireland back row Jack Conan has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup after his foot injury was revealed to be a fracture.

Ulster's Jordi Murphy is now expected to be drafted into the Ireland squad as a replacement.

Leinster man Conan was wearing a protective boot on his injured foot as he watched Ireland's shock 19-12 defeat by hosts Japan in Shizuoka on Saturday.

Conan was injured after a team-mate trod on him in Thursday's training.

The back row came on as a replacement in last weekend's opening win over Scotland and was seen as a key player within Joe Schmidt's squad, having enjoyed an impressive season with the Pro14 champions.

Standby back-row forward Murphy was withdrawn from the Ulster team to face Ospreys shortly before kick-off on Friday night as a precaution.
