Welsh Rugby Union: Ieuan Evans among national council member candidates

Ieuan Evans was a member of British and Irish Lions Test series winning sides in 1989 and 1997

The Welsh Rugby Union has announced nominations for the national council member position have reopened.

Ieuan Evans, Nigel Davies and John Manders were the three candidates initially announced in March.

The process was suspended due to restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

WRU member clubs now have until 10 July to vote for their preferred candidate to take the role previously held by former Wales centre Mark Taylor.

Clubs need to return votes on email directly to the WRU's independent electoral scrutineers, indicating votes for their preferred candidate.

Given current government guidance and restrictions during coronavirus, forms will not be sent to clubs or returned by post.

Council candidates

Evans is a former Wales and British and Irish Lions wing who captained his country on 28 occasions.

The 56-year-old is the fourth highest try scorer for Wales, crossing 34 times in his 79 caps.

Like Evans, Davies also represented Wales and the former centre was appointed Wales head coach in 2007 before holding the same role at Scarlets for four years.

Final candidate Manders is a former police sergeant and the current chairman of Old Illtydians.

The successful candidate will be appointed to the WRU Council to hold office until the close of the 2021 annual general meeting.

The candidate will also be in a position to be elected to the WRU Board as the relevant directors' terms are completed.
