Leicester captain Tom Youngs scored his second try against Gloucester this season to help Tigers to their first away 2020-21 league win.

Having also scored in the season-opening 38-15 win over Gloucester in November, Youngs crossed for the first of Tigers' three tries at Kingsholm.

Centre Dan Kelly and lock Harry Wells also went over to set up a victory that lifts them to sixth in the Premiership.

Gloucester's two tries came from Santiago Carreras and Ed Slater.

Gloucester moved off the bottom of the Premiership with last weekend's 20-18 win at Wasps, followed by Worcester's equally narrow home defeat by Bristol, but could not follow up that victory here.

Leicester, who also won last weekend, have now lost just one of their past five Premiership fixtures against Gloucester - but their only previous away win this season was in the European Challenge Cup in Bayonne in December and they had not won at Kingsholm since September 2016.

On a day for the forwards, in a real season for the forwards, the visitors shaded the honours, led by Youngs, who finished off a driving line-out.

Having scored just seven tries in his previous five seasons combined, the former England hooker's try against Gloucester was his fourth of the campaign.

He was followed over for close-range tries by centre Kelly and lock Wells, to which Zack Henry added a penalty and a conversion.

Gloucester's George Barton converted both tries from Carreras, switched from full-back after Kyle Moyle failed a fitness test, and lock Slater.

Having been 15-7 down at the break, a well-judged pass from England scrum-half Willi Heinz helped Slater power over to tie things up and raise hopes of a third straight win for the Cherry and Whites.

But, despite changing their whole front row, Tigers responded with a sustained period of pressure and, following a break from Henry, Wells crashed over for his side's third try, which proved sufficient to secure victory.

Gloucester head coach George Skivington:

"It's very disappointing. It's difficult to find any positives as we were outmuscled. It wasn't a great game as there were a lot of mistakes and therefore no rhythm.

"I'm glad that we stayed in the fight to the end and we could have won but Leicester showed some terrific defence.

"They played a kicking game and executed it very well to squeeze us as it was very tough and gritty out there - but we fell away at the simple issues.

"Harlequins next week will be a tough challenge because they've only lost at Exeter by a point. However, it will be a totally different game to this, probably a free-flowing one which will test our fitness levels."

Leicester director of rugby Steve Borthwick:

"It was a great contest out there. Gloucester have been playing well of late and it's always a tough place to come. But we knew that the set piece would be crucial.

"We didn't play well in the last 20 minutes but we toughed it out and found a way to win."

Leicester number eight Hanro Liebenberg:

"It was rather nervous at the end as our discipline cost us a bit. However, we stuck to what we do best as our line-outs and mauls were very good. But there is still a bit of work to do on our scrums."
