Alessandro Garbisi was named man of the match as Italy beat Wales in the Under-20 Six Nations

Italy's youngsters added to Wales' rugby worries with a bonus-point Six Nations Under-20s win in Colwyn Bay.

Francois Carlo Mey finished off a superb move to open the scoring with Giovanni Sante converting.

Joe Hawkins kicked two penalties in reply, but Alessandro Garbisi scored another spectacular Italy try to ensure they led at the break.

Garbisi got a second try and Lapo Frangini scored before Luke Davies and Alex Mann hit back.

Italy confirmed a third-place in the table with this win and Ireland later hammered Scotland 59-5 to win the Grand Slam, a result that ensured Wales finished fifth, one place above winless Scotland.

France and England conclude the tournament on Sunday night

Wales boss Byron Hayward made eight changes and a positional switch as he sought a second Six Nations win against the pre-match favourites.

But Hayward, in his first season in charge at this level, saw his side replicate the record of his former senior Wales boss Wayne Pivac with just one win, also against Scotland and defeats by the rest.

Scarlets wing Josh Hathaway made his debut as Oli Andrew, Cameron Winnett and Eddie James returned in the backs and Joe Hawkins moved from centre to outside-half.

In the pack there was a first start for Ospreys loose-head Cameron Jones.

Alex Mann, Tom Cowan and Ben Moa came in to an all-changed back row.

Cardiff flanker Mann was back after suspension to reclaim the captain's armband from Hawkins, who led Wales in a 15-47 defeat by France in round four.

Italy produced a superb opening try as Dewi Passarella's arcing run broke the first line of Wales' defence with wing Flavio Pio Vaccari making further inroads before sending Mey to the line.

Hawkins' boot brought Wales back to within a point.

But in another echo of the previous day's events in Cardiff, Garbisi's first try stemmed from a box kick from Wales scrum-half Morgan Lloyd that did not elicit a strong chase from the hosts, presenting the visitors with the chance for the scrum-half to score.

His older brother Paulo had kicked 11 points as Italy humbled Wales in the senior men's Six Nations and Alessandro will be hoping to join his sibling at senior level in the coming years.

Italy again struck from deep for their third try, scored by impressive Garbisi, and hooker Frangini took a more short-range, direct route to the line.

Wales gained hope as centre Eddie James' clever run and offload put Davies over, Josh Phillips adding the extras.

The hosts then dared to dream as their best attacking move produced a memorable try for Mann, again converted by Phillips.

That score set up a frenetic finale, but it turned out to be too little, too late for the hosts.
