Ospreys wing Mat Protheroe has been handed a three-game ban following his red card for a dangerous tackle on Dragons fly-half Will Reed.

Protheroe was sent off in the first half of Ospreys' 20-5 United Rugby Championship defeat at Rodney Parade.

The suspension will be reduced by one game if Protheroe completes World Rugby's coaching intervention programme.

Protheroe will definitely miss league games against Scarlets and Benetton.

The 27-year-old will be available for the opening Challenge Cup game against Benetton on 9 December in Swansea should he take the World Rugby course.

At a disciplinary hearing, Protheroe accepted he had committed an act of foul play which warranted a red card. His initial suspension of six weeks was halved due to his good record and apology.
