JPR Williams: Bridgend pay tribute to former captain and Wales full-back

Bridgend remember JPR Williams

Bridgend paid tribute to former full-back and Wales and British and Irish Lions legend JPR Williams before the Welsh Premiership match against Pontypridd.

This was the first fixture at the Brewery Field since Williams died aged 74 on 8 January.

His number 15 shirt has been retired for this game and was brought onto the pitch by his son Peter.

Williams' grandchildren presented the match ball before kick-off.

There were a number of former Bridgend players on the field before the game like Meredydd James, Glen Webbe, Rob Howley and Wales team-mates Gerald Davies and Gareth Davies with a moment of silence and applause staged. Bridgend marked the occasion by defeating Pontypridd 15-13.

There was a special retro 1980s match day programme with a picture of JPR on the front and a special tribute from former Lions team-mate Sir Ian McGeechan.

JPR Williams played full-back for Bridgend

Williams captained Bridgend and Wales, winning 55 caps for his country. The former London Welsh and Barbarians full-back was synonymous with Wales and the Lions' glories of the 1970s.

During historic triumphant Lions tours to New Zealand in 1971 and 1974 in South Africa, Williams accumulated eight Test caps.
