Connacht back row Cian Prendergast has replaced Munster's Tom Ahern in Ireland's training squad for the pre-Six Nations camp in Portugal.

Uuncapped Ahern suffered a head injury in the Champions Cup loss to Northampton and will continue his rehabilitation at Munster.

Prendergast, 23, will be one of three training panellists in the squad.

His younger brother, Leinster fly-half Sam, and Munster prop Oli Jager - who are both uncapped - are the others.

Connacht's Prendergast has three caps for Ireland, having made his Test debut in November 2022.

He started at number eight in Ireland's Rugby World Cup warm-up win over England in August but did not earn selection for the tournament in France.

The Ireland squad gathered in Dublin on Monday and will fly to Portugal on Wednesday.

Andy Farrell's side begin the defence of their Six Nations title against France in Marseille on 2 February.
