Second row George Smith has left Northampton Saints to join French Pro D2 side USON Nevers.

The 24-year-old joined Saints last summer, having previously been part of the NFL International Player Pathway.

Smith, who is 6ft 8ins tall, did not play a senior game for Northampton, but made a dozen appearances for Bedford Blues in the Championship and Premiership Rugby Cup.

"I am sure he will have learnt a lot from his time at Saints, and hopefully this next chapter of his career provides him with more opportunities to play rugby regularly," said director of rugby Phil Dowson.
