Glasgow suffered a shock in Italy as they were beaten by Benetton thanks to Rhyno Smith's last-gasp drop goal in the United Rugby Championship.

The Warriors built an 11-point interval lead with tries from Jare Oguntibeju and Josh McKay, but failed to score a single point in a difficult second half.

Instead, Benetton fought back with a try from Italy star Tommaso Menoncello before Jacob Umaga's 70th-minute penalty made it a one-point game.

With the clock in the red, the ball was flung back to full-back Smith, who slotted his drop goal from 50 metres and secured a famous win for the Treviso side.

Having begun the season with a solid victory over the Sharks at Scotstoun, Glasgow's mood was high for the task in Treviso as they welcomed back captain Kyle Steyn and inside centre Sione Tuipulotu.

The visitors started quicker, scoring after 20 minutes when lock Oguntibeju wrestled his way over the line from short range. Adam Hastings, one of seven changes to the starting XV, added the extras.

Umaga struck his first penalty before Glasgow claimed their second try, this time for distance as McKay spotted a gap on the 50m line and ran in untouched.

At half-time, Franco Smith's side seemed comfortable. That dominance wasn't to last long.

It took one line-break and pop pass from hooker Siua Maile to put Menoncello through a gap, and the centre flew to the line to drag the hosts back into the fight.

They suffered a setback when Niccolo Canone was sent to the sin-bin for a no-arms tackle just after the hour. Despite the man disadvantage, Benetton didn't cede a single point.

Instead, replacement prop Patrick Schickerling was penalised for not supporting his own body weight just outside the Warriors' 22m and Umaga slotted from the tee to cut Glasgow's lead to one point with 10 minutes to go.

Up stepped veteran Smyth, with the last kick, to claim a first win for Callum MacRae, the former Edinburgh back now in charge of Benetton.
