Wales forwards Taulupe Faletau and Teddy Williams drop to the bench as Cardiff boss Matt Sherratt juggles his resources to face Bulls in Durban on Saturday.
Cardiff go on to face Stormers in Cape Town six days later, with Sherratt's men the best-placed of the three Welsh teams hoping to make the United Rugby Championship play-offs with two regular-seasons rounds to go.
Skipper Liam Belcher also moves to the bench with Evan Lloyd starting at hooker alongside returning loose-head Corey Domachowski.
They are among six starting changes for the visitors with Rory Thornton taking over from Williams and Faletau making way for Alun Lawrence.
James Botham switches from blind to open-side as Alex Mann returns in the six jersey.
Tinus de Beer returns at fly-half as the only Cardiff backline change with Callum Sheedy dropping out of the matchday squad as Sherratt goes for a 6-2 split on the bench.
Bulls boss Jake White has recalled three Springboks to his squad, with Willie le Roux at full-back, Cameron Hanekom at number eight and Marcell Coetzee at blind-side flanker.
Another Bulls change sees Zak Burger taking over at scrum-half.
Cardiff lie sixth going into the penultimate round of the regular season while Bulls, currently third, already assured of being among the eight sides who reach the knockouts.
Cardiff's morale-boosting win over Munster last time out enhanced their hopes, but two tough tasks await in South Africa.
Scarlets and Ospreys also retain hopes of making the top eight.
Sherratt said: "We will be doing everything possible to stay in that top eight, but we are well aware of how tough the next two weeks will be.
"It all starts on Saturday against the Bulls, who are a quality side and will be hugely motivated to secure a top seeding. They have a big, powerful set-piece and pack, as you would expect, with some really dangerous players behind.
"But we have prepared well, we are looking forward to the challenge and experience of two weeks in South Africa and we will not go down wondering."
