    Harry Paterson

That might be the pick of the bunch for Scotland - and it's more than deserved for Paterson.

An excellent steal from Glen Young inside his own 22m saw Scotland break up the pitch. After multiple good carries, Jamie Dobie's superbly-timed offload found Paterson and he jinked inside to score his first try.

Ben Healy adds the conversion before the water break.

Reed's pace is a real point of difference for Gregor Townsend and Scotland.

That all came from an explosive carry from Dylan Richardson, who ran over the top of Canadian fly-half Peter Nelson like a rhino.

Fair play to Dungannon-born Nelson, he's back up to take the kick-off.

    Arron Reed

A classic winger's score for Reed - the latest Scotland player to get a brace.

Jamie Dobie swept a wide pass out to the Sale Sharks man, who had a bit of space and turned the afterburners on, gassing away from the Canadian defence to run it into the corner.

Harder kick for Thompson, but he sneaks it in.

    Gus Warr

It's a second for Warr as Scotland hit straight back.

Again, Harry Paterson is the creator, bursting through the line and timing his pass to perfection, with Warr able to hold off two tackles as he runs it in.

Another solid kick from Ross Thompson.

Nathan McBeth and Will Hurd are on for their Scotland debuts, replacing Rory Sutherland and Elliot Millar Mills.

There is a real need for a solid back-up to Zander Fagerson now WP Nel has retired. Could Hurd be that man?

    Kyle Baillie

Rumball may have been held short, but Baillie wasn't to be denied, burrowing over from a few yards out.

    Nelson slots the extras, too.

    Canada 5-31 Scotland

Scotland manage to legally collapse the Canadian maul after a few backs tried to support the forwards.

The ball is slowed down brilliantly by the Scottish defence but there's another advantage coming to the hosts.

Lucas Rumball takes it quick, but again he's held up short.

    Canada 5-31 Scotland

Canada turn over the restart and Luke Crosbie is pinged for offside as he hoicks his shorts back up.

Peter Nelson kicks for the corner again. Another test for the Scottish defence.

    Gus Warr

The man who starts it finishes it off!

Warr's first break saw him pop to Arron Reed who ended up yards short. Canada held out for a few phases before Ross Thompson was also held up inches away from the line. Warr was more clinical though, picking up and diving over the ruck to dot down for a debut try.

    Thompson adds the extras.

The clock is now counting up from 40 minutes! Whilst I'm delighted at that, the consistency has to be questioned?

Meanwhile, Scotland have started brightly and a quick Gus Warr tap-penalty has the visitors into Canada's 22m.

  14. Second half beginspublished at 40 mins

Heck of a lot of aerial shots of Ottowa on our screen as we wait for the second half to get under way.

Right, here come the players. Ross Thompson kicks us off.

Harry Paterson has impressed, too. He was off briefly after suffering a nasty cut to his face, but now he's back on he looks dangerous.

Overall, an encouraging start for Scotland and Gregor Townsend. Remember, these games really are all about seeing who is ready to step up and play Tier 1 opposition.

Paterson looks up to it, as does Max Williamson in the second-row.

Gus Warr has impressed at scrum-half for Scotland.

His distribution has been quick, and he's used the blind side really effectively too.

Ross McCann trained with Scotland during this year's Six Nations

There's five potential debutant on the bench. Robbie Smith is a former Scotland age-grade hooker from Dumfries, now at Premiership-winning Northampton Saints, while Nathan McBeth is a South Africa-born loosehead, qualifying through an Edinburgh-born grandad.

Will Hurd is a tighthead at Leicester who was called up for this year's Six Nations but was almost immediately ruled out through injury.

Ewan Johnson was born in England, moved to France aged four, and qualifies through dad Paul from Bathgate. He made 14 starts across the Challenge Cup and Top 14 this season.

Finally, there's Ross McCann - a sevens winger who has converted to 15s and has signed a contract with Edinburgh for next season.

We might see some of them in the second half.

  19. Half-time Canada 5-24 Scotlandpublished at 22:56 British Summer Time 6 July

    Arron ReedImage source, Getty Images

After a nervy first eight minutes, it's been pretty much all Scotland.

It was not the start that Gregor Townsend wanted as his young guns went behind, but they responded brilliantly with two quick tries to put themselves in the driving seat.

They found another two scores to assert their dominance - but how many can they get in the second-half?

    Canada 5-24 Scotland

A Dylan Richardson knock-on gives Canada a bit of possession at the end of the first half - but what can they do with it?

Not much, as they struggle to pierce that navy wall of Scottish defenders and then knock on themselves.

Scotland's turn to try and extend their lead before the break.
