London 2012: Peter Wilson sets shotgun world record in Arizona

Peter Wilson set a new world record score as he won men's double trap gold at the Shotgun World Cup in Arizona.

The 25-year-old, from Dorset, hit 198 of 200 targets on his way to victory, beating the record of 196 set in 2009.

"This is pretty special," said Wilson, while British Shooting's Olympic programme manager Tim Newenham praised his "outstanding performance".

"It's the culmination of thousands of hours of training, both physical and mental," said Newenham.

"It's a great position to be in going into the London Olympics."

Wilson is coached by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, who won double trap gold at the Athens 2004 Olympics and is a member of Dubai's ruling family.

"Peter is one of the favourites for the Olympics - he has the talent," Al Maktoum told BBC Sport late last year.

Richard Faulds is among Wilson's GB team-mates and both will be hoping to emulate Faulds' Sydney 2000 Olympic double trap gold medal in London this summer.
