Mark Selby confident over World Championship chances

Mark Selby feels his form this season means he has a great chance of winning the World Snooker Championship title.

The Leicester cueman begins his challenge with a first-round match against Jimmy Robertson on Wednesday.

He told BBC Sport: "I've been really consistent this year and have risen in the rankings which is a good sign.

"The only thing missing is winning a tournament so hopefully it could be this one. I know what I'm capable of and if I play well I've every chance."

The 27-year-old, who is ranked third in the world, added: "Winning would mean the world to me.

"It's what every player strives for. I've come quite close over the last few years. Hopefully this year I can go one better."

But Selby, a finalist in 2007, is in no doubt that the competition is getting tougher each year and that there are a host of players capable of lifting the title.

"There are probably more than 10 or 11 players that could win the tournament this year," Selby added.

"And, with the standard of snooker now, it wouldn't surprise you if someone outside the top 16 went on to win.

"I think the standard is as hard as it's ever been."

Selby's first-round opponent Robertson, 24, will be making his Crucible debut.

"I don't really know what to expect with Jimmy," Selby continued. "But I still remember my first time here like yesterday. It was very nerve-racking and it was very hard to adapt.

"I need to stamp my authority on the game from the start. I think it's only his second year on the tour so to qualify for Sheffield so early is a great achievement for somebody so young.

"He's obviously a great talent. I can't wait to get out there - I'm really looking forward to it."

The first session of Mark Selby against Jimmy Roberston begins on Wednesday (1900 BST).
