Plymouth-based Olympic swimming gold medallist Ruta Meilutyte has broken her own European 100 metre breaststroke record at the Mare Nostrum in Monaco.

The 16-year-old won the competition in a time of one minute, 05.20 seconds, beating her 1:05.21 effort at last year's Olympic Games.

Lithuanian-born Meilutyte won the gold in the women's 100m breaststroke in London last summer.

She is now set to compete at the World Championships in Barcelona next month.

Meilutyte is eligible for both the European Junior championships taking place in Poznan in July and the World Juniors in Dubai the following month.
