Guernsey swimmer Miles Munro wins European junior gold medal

Guernsey's Miles Munro has won a gold medal for Great Britain at the European Junior Swimming Championships.

The 18-year-old, who will compete for Guernsey at the Commonwealth Games, won gold in the 4x100m relay.

The result came just hours after it was announced that Munro will swim at this summer's Olympic Youth Games in China.

"It's the first time he's swum for Great Britain so to be part of a winning relay team is really pleasing," said his coach Alison Frankland.

"To be successful as a swimmer requires a huge commitment and Miles has been dedicated to the sport for a long time."

And Frankland is hopeful that his upcoming experiences both in Glasgow for Guernsey and in Nanjing for Great Britain, can help the 50m freestyle specialist get to the top of the sport.

"It's an event he can use a stepping stone to achieve his aspiration to represent Great Britain at the Olympics," she told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"But we have to remember this is the youth Olympics, but it's all very exciting.

"Yes he has the potential, but he has a lot of hard work ahead of him."
