Charlotte Atkinson thrilled to represent GB at Olympics

Atkinson is one of 33 British athletes competing across 14 sports in Nanjing

Isle of Man swimmer Charlotte Atkinson is "thrilled" to have been selected to represent Great Britain at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in China.

The 17-year-old is one of eight swimmers selected to represent Great Britain in Nanjing in August.

The event follows the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she will represent the Isle of Man.

"This is my first time representing GB, so I'm really excited," the Plymouth Leander student said.

"I'll be swimming all the butterfly events and hopefully the relays as well.

"I can't wait to get to Nanjing and compete against the best young athletes from all over the world."

Atkinson is currently ranked number one in Great Britain for her age in both the 50m and 100m butterfly.

Earlier this year she propelled herself into the world top 10 in the 100m Butterfly with a time of 58.68 seconds.

She continued: "Swimming for GB is amazing, and has always been my goal, but it's nice that I can also represent my home country at Commonwealths."

The teenager is one of a number of Manx athletes to receive a scholarship from cyclist Mark Cavendish.

Leonie Cooil, team manager for IOM Swimming said: "Everyone is extremely proud of Charlotte's achievements.

"The experiences that she will get this summer in both Glasgow and China will help her as she continues to progress to even bigger events."

Head coach at Plymouth Leander John Rudd said Atkinson could be an "outside bet for a podium" in Glasgow.

In total Team GB has a squad of 33 athletes competing across 14 sports.
