European Swimming Championships 2016: GB relay golds cap impressive meeting

Great Britain's relay teams won the last two events of the European Swimming Championships to complete an impressive meet at the London Aquatics Centre.

GB delivered five medals in Sunday's final session to put the team second in the table behind Hungary.

Fran Halsall and Jazz Carlin won silvers in the women's 50m and 400m freestyle respectively.

Ben Proud secured the bronze in the men's 50m freestyle.

The women's quartet - Kathleen Dawson, Chloe Tutton, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor and Fran Halsall - earned GB's first gold of the evening in the final women's event, the 4x100m relay, before the men - Chris Walker-Hebborn, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Douglas Scott - repeated the feat shortly afterwards.

The British team won the most medals (22) at the Championships: seven gold, six silver and nine bronze. Hungary won 19 medals but topped the table by virtue of their 10 golds.

British Swimming head coach Bill Furniss:

"Our aim was to be on the front foot and swim tactically good races. We paced our races well."

"You have to put the competition in context [with the recent Olympic trials]. You can't do everything and have eight weeks of disrupted training.

"This was a great opportunity to swim in front of a home crowd and we take whatever we get. I am a happy man."
