Taekwondo player Jade Jones wins rising star award

Jade Jones has claimed the Bob Humphrys Award at the SportingWales Rising Star Awards in Cardiff.

The Welsh Taekwondo star won a silver medal in the -57kg category at the World Championships last May.

Jones, 18, from Flint, pipped rugby union wing George North, track cyclist Becky James and disability thrower Aled Sion Davies to the award.

The annual Bob Humphrys award is chosen from the 12 monthly winners of the Sporting Wales Rising Star awards.

It is named after the former BBC Wales sports correspondent and was presented by his widow, Julie Humphrys.

"It is amazing. Everyone was of such a high quality, there were so many people there that I did not expect to win so I am buzzing," said Jones.

"It shows that everyone is hoping for big things from me, so I have got to keep training hard and not let anyone down."

After her World silver in Gyeongju, South Korea, this year Jones, a Youth Olympics gold medallist, has become a genuine Great Britain gold medal hope at the 2012 Olympics in London.

"I did not think it could get any better after winning the Youth Olympics, but then went to the World Championships and got silver which nobody had expected," Jones added.

"Now my weight category has been picked for the Olympics, it is just getting bigger and better.

"As soon as I got the phone call saying my weight had been picked I was so relieved. The pressure is on now and I have to go and perform."

The other monthly award winners were golf's Amy Boulden, cricketer James Harris, netballer Chelsea Lewis, gymnast Jess Hogg, discus thrower Brett Morse, decathlete David Guest, cyclist Sam Harrison and swimmer Jaz Carlin.
