Andy Murray comfortably progresses in Australian Open

A ruthless Andy Murray completed a straightforward 6-1 6-4 6-4 victory over Edouard Roger-Vasselin to reach the third round of the Australian Open.

The British number one took just 23 minutes to win the opening set and quickly broke in the second as his 101st-ranked French opponent struggled.

The third set breakthrough did not come until the seventh game but victory always seemed inevitable for the Scot.

Murray will play France's Michael Llodra in the third round on Saturday.

The fourth seed admitted left-hander Llodra would be a difficult opponent, saying: "The next round is tough, he's got a lot of flair so it'll be a good match."

Murray toiled at the start of his opening match against teenager Ryan Harrison, but had no such trouble against Roger-Vasselin on a balmy evening on Hisense Arena.

"I served well," added Murray. "I didn't give him too many opportunities on my serve, which was important as he played well in the second and third set."

Murray broke the Frenchman in the opening game of the first set and the gulf in class between Roger-Vasselin and the world number four soon became evident when Murray established a 5-0 lead before quickly securing the set.

The Briton then broke in the third game of the second set, with the 28-year-old Frenchman unable to fathom a way of responding to the impressive Murray serves.

Uninhibited and with defeat seemingly inevitable, Roger-Vasselin won his opening service game to love in the third set and posed the Scot problems in the second game when a crosscourt forehand earned him break point.

For the first time in the match the Frenchman was competing, but five aces in seven points drew Murray level at 1-1.

Roger-Vasselin produced an array of impressive groundstrokes, which meant it took Murray until the seventh game to break with a superb angled return.

Murray went on to comfortably serve for a victory which maintains his domination over French opponents, taking his tally to 37 wins in 38 matches against competitors from across the channel.
