Laura Robson confident US Open run can be a breakthrough

Laura Robson has set her sights on repeating her US Open heroics after her run to the fourth round was ended by defending champion Sam Stosur.

Robson became the first Briton to reach a Grand Slam last 16 since Sam Smith at Wimbledon 1998, knocking out seeds Kim Clijsters and Li Na in the process.

"I've learnt I'm good enough to play with these girls and beat them," said the 18-year-old.

"Going into my next tournaments, I can take a lot of confidence."

Robson will now focus on competing in Asia in the coming weeks.

She added: "I can definitely take the fact I'm up there with the top girls in terms of level.

"I said the other day I thought the level has been there. It's just been managing to keep it there for whole matches."

The left-hander, who saved eight match points before being beaten 6-4 6-4 by Australian Stosur, is projected to be ranked around 75 in the world after the US Open is over.

Her next tournament is in Guangzhou in China, starting on 17 September, and she aims to improve her ranking further in time for the Australian Open in January.

She said: "I have to continue working hard and keep the level up. I'll go there with a lot of confidence.

"I think the tournaments in Asia will suit me well as they are quite fast.

"I'd love to continue playing in stadiums like that [in New York] with a crowd like that but I have to get my ranking up a bit more.

"Melbourne's a long way away so I have to keep working hard over the Asia series."
