British number two Dan Evans put a disappointing start to 2014 behind him to win his first ATP main-draw match of the year, beating Jan Hajek in Zagreb.

The 23-year-old was knocked out in Australian Open qualifying.

He was then left out of Britain's Davis Cup side for their victory in USA after going against coach Leon Smith's wishes by not playing a tournament in Hawaii.

Evans, a lucky loser in qualifying, comfortably beat Czech Hajek, 6-3, 6-1 to make the second round.

Birmingham-based Evans had been beaten by Germany's Bjorn Phau in qualifying.
